Milwaukee native Gerhard D. Straus, M.D., died Jan. 22 of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 94.
A 1930 graduate of Washington High School, Straus earned Bachelor of Science and medical degrees from Marquette University, becoming a physician at age 22.
In 1941, Straus married the former Lois Marin, his wife of 60 years, until her death in 2001. He served as a physician in the U.S. Army at Chanute Field (later Chanute Air Force Base) near Champaign-Urbana, Ill., from 1942 to 1946.
Upon returning to Milwaukee, he practiced medicine, specializing in treatment of the ear, nose and throat, with a sub-specialization in corrective surgery for deafness. Straus was a clinical professor of surgery at Marquette University School of Medicine and, in the 1950s, was the chief of the ENT Surgery Service at Marquette.
A member of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, Straus enjoyed fishing and collecting art.
In 1975, Gerhard and Lois Straus moved to Palm Beach, Fla., where he continued to practice ENT medicine at the Veterans Affairs clinic, earning a commendation for outstanding service to the V.A. in 1984.
Straus will be remembered as a moral and principled man who strongly believed in doing the right thing, his family said.
He is survived by sons David (Sabrina) Straus of New York City and Daniel (Darleen) Straus of Riverside, Calif.; sister Dorothy Gursky of Naples, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
The immediate family will hold a memorial service for Gerhard and Lois Straus in Florida on March 1. The family appreciates memorial contributions to Jewish Family Services, Inc.
