Longtime Milwaukee resident Ellen Herszenson died Nov. 23 of heart failure. She was 90.
Born in Tyszowece, Poland, she graduated from high school in Poland in 1932. She and her husband Mendel survived the Holocaust but lost all of their immediate family members. In 1951, they came to Milwaukee from Germany with three young children, according to her family.
She was interviewed on tape by Steven Spielberg for his Survivors of the Shoah Visual History project. She volunteered as a speaker on the Holocaust and participated in several Holocaust remembrance projects, according to her family.
She worked as a seamstress for Weinshal Brothers and was a member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers union. She was also a member of the Newcomers and Yiddish Clubs and volunteered at Mt. Sinai Hospital and the Jewish Home and Care Center.
She loved to dance and sing and enjoyed performing, her family said. She enjoyed being involved in the JHCC Synagogue, they added.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1981. She is survived by daughters Edith (Harry) Pump of Fox Point and Sara (Sam) Hanna of Venice, Fla.; son Dr. Sidney (Suzanne) Herszenson of Fox Point; and seven grandchildren.
Rabbis Shlomo Pontos and Brian Comrov officiated at funeral services Nov. 25. Burial was in Anshai Lebowitz Cemetery.
Memorials to Chai Point Senior Living Apartment Complex or the Helen Bader Center would be appreciated by the family.
