Sheboygan native Earl Richard “Dick” Nemschoff died there June 4 at the age of 78.
After graduation from North High School in 1944, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and then completed a degree in industrial management at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
In 1950, he married Fay Bernhard of Milwaukee and together with his father and brother, founded Nemschoff Chairs, Inc., in Sheboygan. After serving as secretary-treasurer there for 32 years, he opened Dicken’s Studio where he specialized in the restoration and refinishing of antique furniture.
He subsequently worked for the Rehabilitative Center of Sheboygan as a job coach, working with area employers to help disabled people return to the workforce, and then for Creative Cognizance as a counselor.
He was president, trustee and religious school teacher at Congregation Beth El, chair of the local campaign for United Way, a leader with the Boy Scouts of America and a set designer for the Community Players.
He is survived by his wife Fay; daughter Judy (Bruce) Gibbs of Winfield, Ill.; sons David (Terri) Nemschoff of Rockville Center, N.Y., and James (Michele) Nemschoff of San Mateo, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at funeral services in Sheboygan on June 6. Burial was in Sheboygan Hebrew Cemetery.
Memorials to Congregation Beth El or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
