The Coalition for Jewish Learning’s ninth annual Day of Discovery, scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 24, will be held in the newly expanded Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center after two years at an alternate site.

“We’re coming home,” said Alice Jacobson, director of CJL’s Creativity Center.

The free, full-day slate of 35 class offerings, facilitated by a wide variety of Jewish experts and educators, features one class specifically designed for teachers in each of three 90-minute sessions.

Among this year’s offerings are: eight Wisconsin cantors on “The History of Israel Through Music;” “Which Witch is Which? A Brief History of Jewish Black Magic” with Rabbi Brian Comrov; “Kaballah of the Sacred Feminine” with Rabbi Yitzchak Berman; “Israel Film Mosaic: An Exploration of the Development of Israeli Cinema” with Laurie Herman; “B’tzelem Elokim: In G-d’s Image — A Jewish Approach to Self Esteem” with Ali Begoun; and “Bringing Values to Life: Experience the Talking Circle & How It Helps Family, Work and Community” with Sharon and David Lerman.

“This is a wonderful opportunity — everyone has a chance to get a taste of the many different educators we have in our community,” said Jacobson.

The second of the day’s four sessions will include a teacher recognition event and chevruta study, a traditional Jewish method of study in pairs, on “Israel at 60.”

The teachers who will be honored include:

• CJL’s 2007-08 Educator of the Year, Sharon Cohen, of the JCC’s Gan Ami Beginnings Preschool and Kindergarten and Congregation Sinai.

• Gill Incentive for Teachers (GIFT) Awardees Beth Goldstein, Congregation Sinai, and Jennifer Saber, JCC Parenting Center.
• Chai Awardees, Trudy Sirkis, Milwaukee Jewish Day School, and Pauline Zarne, Congregation Sinai.

• CJL’s nominee for the Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education, Yael Gal, of the Milwaukee Jewish Day School.

The day, which is open to the community, is sponsored by CJL, the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, the JCC, and the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis. It is co-sponsored by many organizations and synagogues.

There will be free shuttle service from all of the JCC parking lots as well as the North Building parking lot.
