Telephones will start ringing on Sunday and continue throughout the week, giving Milwaukee Jews the opportunity to support the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Community Campaign 2002 and special Israel NOW campaign during the annual Super Sunday/Super Week phone-a-thon Dec. 2-7.
According to community activist and educator Marty Katz, who is co-chairing the event with his wife, Debra, “We are really hoping that everyone will respond generously this year. Not only does the annual campaign provide funding for the organizations and programs so many of us appreciate locally — such as community activities, schools and education, and programs for our parents — but also through the campaign we can fulfill our responsibility to our overseas family in Israel, the former Soviet Union and elsewhere. We care passionately about our local and overseas communities, and we hope that everyone who answers the call will want to help all the people who are counting on us.”
Funds raised for the community campaign support programs and services that assist the weak, feed the hungry and strengthen Jewish life around the world. Specifically, the dollars help provide food and social services for the frail elderly in Milwaukee, the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, many of whom are Holocaust survivors with no family to provide for them.
Further, the federation, in partnership with its local, national and international agencies, provides help for families in distress, the developmentally disabled and the disadvantaged, and relief to anyone in need.
Additionally this year, the hundreds of volunteers making the calls will ask for a separate gift to support a special fundraising effort, Israel NOW, which has been launched to help prepare for an emergency medical response and intensified security measures, especially for young children, in Milwaukee’s Partnership 2000 Region of Sovev Kinneret (the area near the Sea of Galilee).
“Through immediate financial support, Milwaukeeans can make a significant difference in demonstrating their solidarity with the people of Israel during this time of unrelenting violence,” Katz added.
