CJL to recognize Cooper as ‘Educator of the Year’

The Coalition for Jewish Learning, the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, will hold its annual Teacher Recognition Evening on Sunday, Aug. 24, 4:30-8:30 p.m. at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.

Cindy Cooper has been named the 2003 Educator of the Year. An art specialist, she has taught at Congregation Sinai for 20 years and assists teachers and families in creating art projects at CJL’s Creativity Center. Over the years, she has introduced students to a wide range of art media, enabling them to interpret and express Jewish concepts, and has created hands-on learning activities and games. Further, she has illustrated many of the books produced by the Creativity Center, as well as created projects to enhance the learning of Judaic content and home observance. Through her artwork, she demonstrates the importance of art in Judaism.

Further, Michael Brandwein, educator and author, will speak on “The Top Teaching Tools for Terrific Teachers: Making Positive Differences in Jewish Education” at 5 p.m. Known for his “use it immediately focus,” the award-winning speaker will provide practical techniques for enhancing Jewish learning at all levels of Jewish education. Brandwein has written several books on training and supervising youth leaders and wrote and presented three Emmy-winning television programs on communication with young people.

Following a 6:30 p.m. dinner, the awards will be presented. In addition to Cooper, Tziporah Altman-Shafer, a teacher at the Milwaukee Jewish Day School, and Chava Kintis, who teaches at Congregation Shalom, will receive the Gill Incentive For Teachers (GIFT) Award.

Chai Award winners are Aimee Bachar, MJDS; Anne Becker, Shalom; Judy Dermer, MJDS; Susan Esser-Greenberg, MJDS; Laeh McHenry, Shalom; Rena Porat, MJDS; Arlene Rubin, MJDS; Julie Shlensky, Shalom; George Strick, Beth Torah Religious School, Merkaz and Congregation Sinai; and Rabbi Yoel Turgeman, Hillel Academy.
