Betty Ziger

Lifelong Milwaukeean Betty Joyce Ziger (nee Blankstein) died Oct. 10 after a prolonged illness. She was a resident of the Jewish Home and Care Center.

She was a graduate of Washington High School and worked as a secretary while her husband, Bernie, earned his pharmacy degree. Although he worked as a licensed pharmacist, the couple also worked side by side when he owned and managed AEF Salvage, a business passed down from his father, Joseph Ziger.

Further, she enjoyed playing mahjong and cards with her lifelong friends. According to her family, “She spent most of her time making others feel better and bringing out the best in those whom she touched.”

She was a member of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue and its Sisterhood. In addition, she was a volunteer at Colonial Manor Nursing Home, where her husband resided. She also established a family advocacy group there to ensure quality care.

Her daughter Donnalyn (Dr. Dennis) Maiman of Mequon said, “My mother was a fighter and we are proud of her.” She added that she will always remember the smile she wore every day.

“My mother gave me the most precious gifts in life,” said daughter Evelyn (Milt) Greenberger of Glendale. “She taught me how to be a mother and friend to my own children. The relationship that I have with my children is a direct reflection of the love and friendship my mother and I shared. I truly will miss not only my mother, but one of my best friends.”

In addition to her husband and daughters, she is survived by son David (Ellen) Ziger of San Antonio, Tex.; sister Shyla Blankstein of Glendale; and nine grandchildren.
Rabbi Dovid Rapoport officiated at graveside services on Oct. 13 at Mound Zion Cemetery.

The family would appreciate contributions to the Isadore and Sylvia Blankstein Library at Congregation Beth Israel, the American Cancer Society or the Cystic Fibrosis Society.
