Longtime Milwaukeean Bessie “Bess” Hankin, nee Dressels, died of pneumonia March 25. She was 91.
Born in Bialystok, Poland, she came to Milwaukee as a young child. She graduated from North Division High School in 1932.
Following graduation from secretarial school, she worked as a secretary for the U.S. government.
She was a charter member of Congregation Shalom and belonged to Hadassah-Milwaukee Chapter, Women’s American ORT and National Council of Jewish Women.
Her special interests included the Congregation Shalom Sisterhood, volunteering at Columbia Hospital, exercise, dancing, travel, music and gardening.
Preceded in death by husband Arthur Hankin in 1972, she is survived by daughter Francie (Alan) Fox-Schweber of Alexandria, Va.; sons Steven (Delia) Hankin of Arlington, Va., and David (Ruby) Hankin of San Francisco; brother Sidney Sloane of Mequon; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Rabbi Shari Shamah officiated at funeral services on March 28. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.
Memorials to Congregation Shalom or the Jewish Home and Care Center would be appreciated by the family.
