Area MJF donors to provide ‘extraordinary’ hope on Super Sunday

Every Sunday is super in Milwaukee when the Green Bay Packers play. But, Sunday, Dec. 8, is “No ordinary Sunday” because it is the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s annual Super Sunday phonathon — and the Packers don’t play until later that evening!

Super Sunday and Super Week 2003 are a crucial part of the annual MJF Community Campaign 2003, which is themed “In ordinary times, in extraordinary times, your gift provides hope.”

Event co-chair Cheryl Moser said, “We wanted to tie the theme of Super Sunday/Week to the general fundraising campaign. We brainstormed a lot, and chose this theme to create a sense of connection between the annual campaign and this phonathon.”

She added, “With the help of community volunteers making these important phone calls, we can raise funds to meet the ordinary and extraordinary needs that are facing our people today. These are not ordinary times for Jews in Milwaukee, in Israel and around the world.

“Only with increased gifts to the campaign can we meet our responsibility to help all the people who have come to count on us. This year, 50 percent of every gift increase will support Israel’s continuing emergency needs.”

“To jumpstart our effort,” said Dan Sinykin, co-chair, “we’ve decided to take advantage of the success and experiences of past campaign volunteers. We’ve appealed to our seasoned leadership to share their passion and to motivate current campaign workers.”

Leaders who will kick off each phonathon session include Elaine and Bill Appel, Mark Brickman, Jane Gellman, Todd Lappin and Marlene Lauwasser.

In recruiting volunteers, Sinykin said, “Community members are being asked to give just two hours of their time and to sign up for one of the sessions. There are non-phone volunteer capacities, too.”

More than 40 phone lines will be hooked up in the Marcus Community Hall at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, where all sessions will be held.

The three sessions scheduled for Super Sunday are 9-11 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. Super weeknight sessions are set for 7-9 p.m., Monday, Dec. 9, Wednesday, Dec. 11, and Thursday, Dec. 12.
