Anne Hilda Katz

Anne Hilda Katz died April 15 of natural causes. She was 93.

She was born in Mistaslav, Belarus, in 1910. At age 12, according to her niece, Rea (Richard Bartlein) Katz of Milwaukee, she and her mother left home and “journeyed hundreds of miles in a hay wagon” in order to reach a port from which to sail for the United States to join her father, who had emigrated earlier. Her family was involved in the Workman’s Circle in Chicago when she was growing up.

She lived in Chicago for 75 years and worked in the purchasing department of Montgomery Ward. After retirement, she volunteered for a private neighborhood school. She moved to Milwaukee in 1998.

According to her niece, she was “an adventurous woman,” who loved to travel in Europe and North America; and “Her family recalls her wry sense of humor and sharp wit that served her throughout her long life.”

She is also survived by her brother William (Estelle) Katz of Milwaukee; niece Diane (Phil Bizzarri) Katz of Pittsboro, N.C.; nephews David (Ann) Katz of Sacramento, Calif., and Aaron (Kate Dougherty) Katz of Seattle; and seven grandnieces and grandnephews.

Burial took place at Mound Zion Cemetery on April 26.

Memorial contributions to Congregation Shir Hadash would be appreciated by the family.
