Alfrieda Miller (nee Fromstein) of Shorewood died Oct. 7 of colon cancer. She was 87 years old.
Born in Milwaukee, she was in the charter class of Roosevelt Junior High School and graduated from North Division High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society.
During school, she studied for ten years at the Milwaukee Talmud Torah, in which she was the only girl in the high school program and where she worked as part-time librarian. In notes written before her death, Miller wrote, “This was a wonderful part of my life.”
After high school, she worked at a Works Progress Administration job before beginning secretarial work at the University Extension Division and later with Dorothy Enderis, director of the Department of Municipal Recreation and Adult Education of Milwaukee Public Schools. She went on to work as executive secretary for the Milwaukee Bureau of Jewish Education, where she also taught Hebrew.
She later worked at the Dave Miller Costume Shop with her husband and at the School of Allied Health Professions at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee until her retirement in 1981.
She and her husband, Dave Miller, who died in 1996, were charter members of Congregation Shalom. She was a member of B’nai B’rith, Hadassah, Women’s American ORT, NA’AMAT U.S.A., Wisconsin Society for Jewish Learning and Congregation Shalom’s sisterhood.
According to her daughter, “Jewish education was always very important to her and she was always especially committed to Hebrew education because it had been such an important part of her life.
“She was an excellent homemaker who enjoyed cooking and baking. In her later years, she was also a committed walker and could often be seen walking her Shorewood neighborhood.”
Survivors include her son, Dean Miller of Irving, Tex.; daughter Karen Sundell of Cedarburg; sister Libby Fromstein of Milwaukee; brother David Fromstein of Madison; and 3 grandsons.
Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at funeral services on Oct. 8. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
The family would appreciate memorial contributions to Congregation Shalom.
