Federation celebrates future at annual meeting

The Milwaukee Jewish community is about to begin a “new chapter” in its “proud history,” said Stacey Kohl, co-chair of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation 2005 annual meeting and Capital Campaign groundbreaking ceremony along with her husband, Daniel Kohl.

The 103rd annual meeting, attended by approximately 215, held at the Karl Jewish Community Campus on Wednesday, June 22, was a mix of business and celebration.

In the invocation, Rabbi Pinchas Avruch made specific reference to the Capital Campaign. “We come together today, as a community, to first open the earth and begin to plant the seeds that will take a number of years to yield its bounty,” he said.

“We today are the beneficiaries of visionaries long ago who worked to build a community that lives and works together, educates its children, is proud of and celebrates its heritage and culture, and offers a plurality of Jewish choices to its members,” said Avruch, who received the MJF Rabbinic Award last November.

During the federation annual report, federation president David J. Lubar thanked all of those who contributed to and participated in the 2005 Annual Campaign, including general campaign chairs Penny and Jim Deshur, who helped raise more than $8 million.

Richard H. Meyer, MJF executive vice president, named two significant numbers during his remarks — the 400 new donors who contributed to this campaign and the 1,000 “additional solicitations that were completed” this year.

He thanked those who have worked on this year’s endeavors, who were “running the core business” of the federation and “at the same time, helping to drive the community forward.”

Meyer also announced that the federation, in partnership with the Helen Bader Foundation, is working to form a community-wide health insurance group that will be available to all Jewish community agencies, organizations and synagogues.

After a screening of the Capital Campaign video and update, Meyer and Lubar, along with Stephen L. Chernof and Judy Segall Guten, capital campaign steering committee co-chairs; and Robert L. Habush, Sheldon Lubar and Stephen Marcus, capital campaign cabinet co-chairs, symbolically broke ground, signifying the beginning of the renovation and expansion of federation-owned properties.

Mayor Tom Barrett spoke briefly at the event, and Betsy L. Green, nominating committee chair, presented the nominating committee report.

Officers elected during the meeting included Jerry Benjamin, Mark E. Brickman, Moshe Katz, Marlene Lauwasser, Abigail Nash and Sue Strait, vice presidents; Bruce Arbit, treasurer and president-elect; Richard Ruvin, assistant treasurer; Frederick R. Croen, secretary; and Jody Kaufman Loewenstein, and Scott Sampson, officers-at-large.

Board members beginning a two-year term include William Appel, Aaron Bernstein, James Deshur, Penny Deshur, Stephanie Dykeman, Judith Eigen, Robert Habush, Daniel Kohl, Keith Lindenbaum, David Marcus, Ali Ruvin, Alexsander Satanovsky, Andrew Satinsky, Bonnie Shafrin and Debra Slater.
