Parfenovich awarded HIAS scholarship

Shorewood High School student Yana Parfenovich, graduating this week, is one of 150 Jewish teens to be awarded a Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society scholarship.
The $1,500 HIAS scholarships, awarded to immigrant students from all over the world now living in the U.S., were presented in a ceremony in New York, June 8.
In all, HIAS awarded $225,000 at the New York ceremony to students from Uzbekistan, Kenya, Iran and Belarus, among other places.
Parfenovich, who emigrated from Smolensk, Russia, with the aid of HIAS, is being recognized for her academic achievement and community involvement.
