Hillel International recognizes UW exec

Hillel Foundation University of Wisconsin executive director Greg Steinberger received the 2002 Richard M. Joel Exemplar of Excellence Award at the Hillel International Professional Staff Conference in Princeton, N.J. last month.
One of seven recipients, he was recognized for “provoking a renaissance of Jewish life on his campus,” said Joel, president and international director of Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life.

Among the challenges he faced, according to a release, were a budget deficit, lack of students and no lay leaders on the board. In three years, he has tripled the annual operating budget and Jewish life is thriving with 26 Jewish student organizations under Hillel and a calendar filled with activities for Jewish students.
