Shirley Irene Tarney

September 20th, 2002

Lifelong Milwaukeean Shirley Irene Tarney (nee Kimmel) died Aug. 27. She was 82.
A graduate of Washington High School, she belonged to Hadassah and Temple Menorah.

She was instrumental in establishing a beauty salon in the Jewish Home for the Aged on Milwaukee’s west side with Evelyn Rosen. She and other volunteers washed and styled the residents’ hair, and took great pride in making the elderly women feel good about themselves, according to the family. They also solicited companies to donate hair dryers and products.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Albert Tarney of Bayside; daughters Shari (David) Lowe and Judith (Gary) Stein, both of Milwaukee; son Gene Tarney of Milwaukee; brother Peter Kimmel of Milwaukee; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Rabbis Isaac and Gil-Ezer Lerer officiated at graveside services at Mound Zion Cemetery on Aug. 29.
