Destroying chametz

May 1st, 2012

On the morning of April 6, dozens of Jews at different times brought chametz (products made of leavened flour) to the North Shore Fire Department Station 2 in Glendale. They placed them in a fire supervised by staff firefighter and paramedic Dan Wrecke (in baseball cap at right) to fulfill a commandment to destroy remaining chametz before the holiday of Passover, which began that evening. At one point, Rabbi Wes Kalmar (in suit at right) of Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah handed out flyers describing the mitzvah and containing a Hebrew sentence recited when performing the mitzvah.
