CDs available for 1979 ‘Another Butterfly’ performers
May 1st, 2012
In 1979, a group of about 40 Milwaukee students, age 10 to 16, performed the cantata “I Never Saw Another Butterfly,” based on poetry written by Jewish children the German Nazis’ Terezienstadt ghetto, with music by Cantor Charles Davidson.
The director of that performance was Joyce Altman, president of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, and a pianist and choir director.
She recently has made CDs from tape recordings of that concert, and is making them available free of charge to members of that choir.
“This is incredibly hard music and an incredibly hard subject for young kids to go through,” Altman told The Chronicle. Yet the performance “was a highlight of all the activities I’ve done in my life.”
The CDs are “my way of saying ‘thank you’ to them for making such an impression on me,” she said.
Anybody who performed in those concerts and would like to obtain a CD should contact Altman by email, firstname.lastname@example.org.
