Israeli documentary premieres in U.S. Sept. 8

August 28th, 2008

The Israeli documentary, “Flipping Out,” has its U.S. television premiere Monday, Sept. 8, on the Sundance Channel.

This film by award-winning filmmaker Yoav Shamir reveals a dangerous rite of passage for many young Israeli soldiers — the use of their military discharge bonus to fly to India, where, according to the National Film Board of Canada Web site, “approximately 90 percent will use drugs.

“Each year some two thousand of them will need professional help due to this drug use. The psychotic break with reality they experience is commonly referred to as ‘flipping out.’”

The movie also tells of the efforts of the local Chabad and the Israeli government to intervene.
