Gilbert honored as Distinguished Alumnus

August 28th, 2008

Eugene G. Gilbert of Whitefish Bay was honored by his high school alma mater, Rufus King High School, on July 27. Gilbert, who graduated in 1944, was one of three alumni from different classes to be presented with a Distinguished Alumni Award.

Gilbert served in the U.S. Army Air Corps immediately after high school graduation and then entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He graduated in 1949 with a degree in business administration.

He pursued a career in the securities industry, during which he consulted for many large union pension funds and created a no-load mutual fund for members of the AFL/CIO unions, among other things.

In 1992, he began seven years of volunteer service as an investment consultant for the International Executive Service Corporation. They sent him to Pakistan, Poland, Slovakia, India, Bulgaria and Zimbabwe to create or develop local mutual funds.

He said that living and working in these less-developed countries was a highlight and the most rewarding experience of his life.

Gilbert and his wife of 58 years, Inez, have three children and six grandchildren.
