To the editor:

(Re: Musician Ben Sidran’s 1960s reunion recalls Jewish influx, February, 2018)  I was one of those Jewish students from New York who descended on Madison in the ’60s. With our long dark hair, dungarees and black turtlenecks we were definitely different from the pageboy, skirt and sweater sets of the Midwest girls. We hung out at the Rat, argued politics, and took to the streets when necessary. We met other students who had never seen a Jew and Jews from other parts of the country. When my husband and I (another New York Jew) moved to Milwaukee seven years after graduating, it was partly due to the fact that my sister had married a Milwaukee Jew, and that other friends we had made in Madison were also living there.

My two favorite teachers were Harvey Goldberg and George Mosse, both their lectures were always filled.

Here are some photos I took in those years as a contributing photographer for the Daily Cardinal (editor at the time was Jeff Greenfield) and the Yearbook. Can’t resist also sending one of me, not in dungarees and a turtleneck – but wearing my “Boycott Grapes” shirt.
