Milwaukeean helps Chicago
school win model U.N. prize

A student from Milwaukee helped a Chicago-area Jewish day school win a first place prize at the National High School Model United Nations, held in March in New York City.

Milwaukeean Ari Rosenthal, 16, is the son of Michal and Ed Rosenthal. He goes to the Chicagoland Jewish High School, the Conservative movement day high school in Deerfield, Ill.

According to his mother, Ari was a member of the school’s model United Nations team. According to a March 12 Chicago Tribune story, the school of 150 students sent a team of 26 that participated in a field of 155 schools and 3,800 teens from across the U.S. and from 21 other nations.

The CJHS team represented South Korea in the event, which took place at the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan, according to the Tribune.

The event is run by the International Model United Nations Association. A group of judges followed all proceedings, and organizers set up the basic situations and sprang surprise events, like the murder of a fictitious U.N. delegate, on the participants.

CJHS was one of three teams that won the top-level “Award of Distinction,” which was presented at the real United Nations building on March 7.

Given how Israel has so many difficulties with the U.N., said Michal Rosenthal, it was amazing that a Jewish school’s team, containing “boys with kipot [Jewish skullcaps] on their heads,” could win this prize.

Milwaukeean Neil Wallace recently received a certificate in Jewish studies from the Jewish Learning Institute, an adult education program of the Chabad Lubavitch movement.

He received the recognition for having taken and completed Jewish studies courses for the past 10 years, according to a letter he wrote to The Chronicle.
