Franklin sends cards
as a service project

Alexander Franklin, a second grader at Parkway Elementary School, recently completed a community service project. He delivered about 200 hand-drawn valentines to senior residents at Laurel Oaks, including his great-grandmother, Mildred Franklin.

According to an email from his father, Franklin “was able to get his entire grade to participate in the project.”

Franklin is also a student at Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid and a tae kwon do student at J. K. Lee. According to his father, he is hoping to perform a Passover card drive later.

He is the son of Alla and Andrew Franklin of Glendale.

Israeli high school

Alex Hart, 17, from Milwaukee is one of the students featured in an article in the Feb. 1 Jerusalem Post about the Naale Elite Academy, an Israeli high school program for Diaspora Jews.

The program is funded by Israel’s Ministry of Education and the Jewish Agency for Israel. Students receive a full scholarship with all expenses paid.

The article quotes Hart as saying, “I think Naale is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Naale does a really good job of setting us up and pointing us in the right direction, especially if your intent is to stay here in Israel.”

That appears to be Hart’s intent. In a separate article sent to The Chronicle by Gidon Berman — Naale Elite Academy representative to the central U.S., based in Highland Park, Ill. — Hart is quoted as saying she will enter the Israel Defense Force after graduation and serve there before going to college.

Hart is one of about 160 students from 26 countries participating in the program this year, according to information provided by Berman.
