Showing love with our locks

Once again, Hillel Foundation hosted its annual Locks of Love event. In early April UW students, faculty and community members came to campus to receive a free haircut and donate their hair to the Locks of Love organization, whose mission is to provide hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children (under age 18) suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Locks of Love meets a unique need for children with medical hair loss by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics, restoring their self-esteem, confidence, and enabling them to face the world and their peers.

Two years ago I donated my hair to Locks of Love for the first time, and donated 10 inches of my hair once again this year. It is not an easy decision for many to chop off 10 inches of hair. However, Locks of Love gives us a reason to feel good about such a decision. As soon as my tresses were cut, I began to re-grow my hair so I can donate again.

This event enabled all participants to give a simple donation that can mean a lot for the recipients. It feels great knowing that children will benefit from something that so many of us take for granted.
